Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents (STEPS-A)

DBT for School and Classroom Use

DBT STEPS-A offers an alternative to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum without limitations:

  • A universal curriculum that teaches emotion management strategies, decision making skills, and interpersonal skills at the individual level

  • Originally developed for non-clinicians to teach at a Tier 1 level

  • Students are taught skills with a high degree of specificity and with explicit definitions that are geared towards issues and stressors that children and teens face

  • Drawn from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which is based on the biosocial theory of pervasive emotional dysregulation

  • Preliminary outcome research supports effectiveness in middle school and high school settings
